It is fully automated device to built unit loads. It is mainly used when flexibility is required e.g. the distributor pallet loading problem. Its greatest limitation is its capacity i.e. typically 6 cycles per minute; and its capacity is determined by the number of items handled with each peak operation. A operator arrange items into the desired pattern for each layer of the unit load and a powered device is used to transfer layers onto a pallet and then lower the load for next layer. Traditionally, robotic palletizing has been viewed as an intermediate step between strictly manual and fully automatic. For a robot to make sense at the end of the line, the application had to be low-volume and/or highly variable, with shifting pallet patterns that requires great flexibility. They can handle a variety of functions in much more easier manner than conventional palletizers. In pick and place systems picked up a product at one point and placed it at a second repeatedly. Robotic palletizers may be thought of as intelligent, discriminating systems capable of picking up several different products and placing them at several different points.
