A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium. The load is attached to the hoist by means of a lifting hook. It is used for vertical translation i.e. lifting and lowering of loads. These hoists are frequently attached to cranes and monorails to provide vertical translation capability. It can be operated manually, electrically and pneumatically. It performs the function of lifting heavy loads which is mostly used in industries and for road construction work. A hoist can be a just in the form of chain and in the form of hoist which is attached to a truck, known as hoist truck. It is mostly used for storage and transportation of goods of an industry.
